Extrajudicial executions in Cayara - Plan Operativo Persecucion
Army executed Cayara villagers during a reprisal operation after a hiker attack.
In retaliation to the Shining Path attack the day before, Army forces executed the Operational Plan 'Persecution' commanded by Major Miguel Nájar Acosta. Approximately 200 military troops entered Cayara where they killed villagers gathered in the church celebrating the feast of the Virgin of Fatima. Indalecio Palomino Tueros, Teodosio Noa Pariona, Patricio Jayo Cahuaymi, Santiago Tello Crisóstomo and Emilio Berrocal Crisóstomo were executed. They also killed Esteban Asto Palomino at the entrance of the town. The military later disappeared the bodies to cover up the crimes.
