Political Violence in Lima. Shining Path Strategy and Responses

This work is a fairly complete and detailed chronological study of what the actions of Sendero Luminoso were. The first section, titled "1980–1987: Political Violence — A Problem for Indians," speaks of the outpouring of accumulated demands produced by the economic crisis and held in check by the dictatorship. The following section of the book, titled "1988–1991: Political Violence, the Country's Main Problem," details how at the end of 1989 SL's call for an armed strike was met with a peace march that achieved massive popular participation, causing the intended shutdown to fail. Along with this event, others related to the actions of the country's armed and police forces are recounted. The following section, titled "1992–1994: The Strategic Defeat of Sendero," explains how the government of Alberto Fujimori systematically set about halting the bloody actions of this movement.
