Thinking the Forgotten Paths of History and Memory: Political Violence in the Communities of Chuschi and Quispillacta, 1980-1991
Thinking about "Los senderos olvidados de historia y memoria: la violencia política en las comunidades de Chuschi y Quispillaccta, 1980–1991," by Marté Sanchéz, is an effort to narrate and understand what really happened in both communities, and how their residents and authorities remember the events that transformed their lives and their territories into fields of war. It also helps to understand the reasons why the population initially sympathized with the cause of Sendero Luminoso. The historical reconstruction has a dual value because it is not limited to reviewing the immediate antecedents of the internal armed conflict — which, of course, shows us the ways in which Sendero patiently infiltrated through the Mariscal Cáceres school — but also takes us through the long history of communal conflicts over land tenure, and the diverse visions that community members held throughout history regarding the Peruvian State.
