Massacre of Lucanamarca by the PCP-SL
PCP-SL massacred 69 peasants in Lucanamarca in reprisal for rebellion
On April 3, 1983, the PCP-SL attacked Lucanamarca in one of the worst massacres of the civilian population of the internal armed conflict. Approximately eighty subversives under Horacio's command entered at dawn, starting with the ranches in the puna. At ten o'clock in the morning they arrived at the town. They led men, women, children and the elderly to the plaza. They executed them with axes, machetes, sticks and picks. They murdered 69 peasants. Two people survived. The PCP-SL justified this action as a forceful response to the peasant rebellion.
