LUCANAMARCA, A TRAGEDY WE MUST NOT FORGET

On April 3, 1983, a group of Shining Path members entered several hamlets in the high plateau on the way to Lucanamarca and killed 69 people — men, women, and children — with firearms and machetes. This armed action was decided and ordered by the Central Committee of Sendero Luminoso in retaliation for the uprising of the organized inhabitants of the communities of Huanca Sancos against the Shining Path.
