Memories of Violence

They were murdered with cruelty, struck with machetes and axes. It happened on April 3, 1983, and since then the small village of Lucanamarca, in the Ayacucho province of Huancasancos, has struggled to heal the wounds — both physical and those of memory — left by the years of violence in the country. Until now, Lucanamarca had only been viewed through the eyes of those who came to investigate and asked about the experience of those years. Until now, Lucanamarca had not looked at itself.
