Violence and Memory in the Work of Carlos Iván Degregori

To reflect on the contributions of Carlos Iván Degregori to memory studies, I review his bibliography. I find that from the emergence of Sendero Luminoso in the early 1980s, his work was focused on understanding the phenomena of contemporary political violence in Peru. He studied in depth the origins of Sendero Luminoso, researching the conditions and events that anticipated its rise. He later studied La década de la antipolítica, that of Fujimori and Montesinos. In 2001 he joined the Comisión de Verdad y Reconciliación, and in that role, the history of the recent past and the memories of those who were participants in and victims of the conflicts and violence became the focus of his activity.
