Abimael Guzmán 20 Years After the Capture: Fujimori Did Not Know About Operation Victoria and Upon Learning of It Toasted With Champagne
The former director of the Dircote, Antonio Ketín Vidal, recounted two days ago that neither former president Alberto Fujimori nor his then-right-hand man, Vladimiro Montesinos, knew the day or hour when the genocidal Abimael Guzmán was going to be captured. "It was a secret out of necessity," he stated. That explains why on September 12, 1992, Fujimori was fishing in the jungle and Montesinos was calling Vidal to ask whether what the television was reporting was true "or were they 'joking around'?" However, today Kenji Fujimori denied that his father had been fishing that day as the press has reported over the years. "We were at Group 8, about to leave on a trip to the provinces, when an officer gave my father the news. What was the first thing he did? He opened a bottle of champagne and toasted to it — it had been a major blow," was his version in an interview with Canal N.
