Police capture Abimael Guzman and three Shining Path leaders
After a successful police operation by GEIN (renamed DIVICOTE-1), it was possible to apprehend Abimael Guzmán Reinoso - top leader of the PCP-SL, together with 3 members of the leadership of the Central Committee: Elena Iparraguirre, Laura Zambrano and María Pantoja. The capture was the result of the dedicated and prolonged police work of DINCOTE, not of a new government strategy as was officially presented.
