On September 12, 1992, Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, top leader of the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL), was captured along with other members of the Central Committee of the subversive organization. This operation represented a decisive blow against the leadership of the PCP-SL. The capture took place in the context of the VI Military Plan of the PCP-SL called "Building the Conquest of Power", which had begun in March 1992. This event marked a turning point in the counter-subversive struggle in Peru.
