With Fujimori, Peru Became a Slaughterhouse

Peru was a slaughterhouse when Alberto Fujimori, president of the country from 1990 to 2000, authorized State terrorism against the Maoist terrorism of Sendero Luminoso. For four months now, the former ruler has been on trial in the Peruvian capital as the instigator of the serious human rights violations committed during that decade of bloodshed and outrages. His stance consists of denying all responsibility for what happened: "If some execrable acts were committed, I condemn them, but they were not ordered by the person speaking," he declared at trial. The defendant faces a sentence that could reach 30 years in prison. Published on May 24, 2008.
