Between Stigma and Silence. Memory of Violence Among Students of UNMSM and UNSCH

The present research — Entre el estigma y el silencio: memoria de la violencia entre estudiantes de la UNMSM y la UNSCH — deals precisely with one of the institutions most clearly marked by that inertial memory of violence: the Peruvian public university, and in particular two emblematic institutions: the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, and the Universidad Nacional San Cristóbal de Huamanga in Ayacucho. In both cases, the inherited memory of the years of internal armed conflict continues to play a prominent and mostly problematic role in the current image of the university and in the identity of its students. Taken together, as this publication highlights, those persistent images and identities in society also have complex effects on the institutional functioning of these universities and on their capacity to offer their students a genuine intellectual, professional, and civic educational experience.
