A group of Ayacuchan residents flee their community with their belongings

A group of Ayacuchan residents flee their community with their belongings, seeking to move to the city. As a consequence of the violence, fearing becoming victims of both Sendero Luminoso and the Armed Forces, the population of the country's interior was forced to migrate to the cities. Thousands of families arrived at provincial capitals and settled on the outskirts of cities. In the city of Lima, displaced families from Ayacucho, Junín, Huancavelica, and Apurímac settled mainly in the districts of Ate Vitarte and San Juan de Lurigancho.
