Sendero Luminoso's Last Meeting at UNSCH
On May 1, 1980, members of the Sendero Luminoso held a final meeting at the National University of San Cristóbal de Huamanga (UNSCH) to announce the start of their 'people's war.' The event was marked by speeches under a display of red flags, with participants dressed in attire reminiscent of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. This meeting symbolized their departure from the university and the beginning of their armed struggle.
Los cuadros senderistas, que habían abandonado progresivamente la UNSCH, realizaron su despedida definitiva el Día Internacional del Trabajo, el 1 de mayo de 1980. Bajo un bosque de banderas rojas, los militantes vestidos con chaquetas y gorros similares a los usados por los guardias rojos en la Revolución Cultural China, anunciaron el inicio de la guerra popular. En el acto, líderes como Edith Lagos, Casanova, Zorrilla y Durand pronunciaron discursos bélicos y proféticos sobre el futuro que debía construirse. Tras esa reunión, los militantes senderistas desaparecieron de la universidad.
