First Incursion of PCP-SL in Cerro de Pasco
On May 17, 1980, the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL) made its first significant incursion in the department of Cerro de Pasco. The group attacked the Provincial Council and a local school with dynamite, marking the beginning of its presence in the region. This event was part of a broader campaign of violence and subversion that extended to mining centers throughout the 1980s.
El 17 de mayo de 1980, coincidiendo con el inicio de la "guerra popular" en Ayacucho, el PCP-SL atacó con petardos de dinamita el Concejo Provincial y la Escuela Estatal No. 34004 de Cerro de Pasco. Esta primera incursión fue dirigida por "Feliciano" y "Johan", líderes del Comité Regional del Centro que operaba en Junín y Pasco desde 1981 a 1985. Aunque este ataque marcó el surgimiento del PCP-SL en el departamento, fue recién a finales de 1983 cuando la organización apareció con fuerza en el escenario minero de la región.
