Start of the Internal Armed Conflict in Peru

Sendero Luminoso otorgó gran importancia a los procesos electorales en su lucha revolucionaria. El atentado contra la oficina del registro electoral en Chuschi (Cangallo, Ayacucho) el 17 de mayo de 1980 marcó el inicio simbólico del conflicto armado interno, convirtiéndose en una fecha fundamental en el calendario senderista como el inicio de la Lucha Armada. Esta fecha fue precedida y seguida por múltiples acciones subversivas dirigidas a sabotear las elecciones generales, incluyendo toma de instituciones, dinamitaduras de registros electorales y locales de partidos políticos en diversas ciudades del país.
