Beginning of the Shining Path's Armed Conflict in Peru
On May 17, 1980, the Shining Path (PCP SL) initiated its 'people's war' against the Peruvian state with a series of explosive attacks on public facilities, focusing heavily on Ayacucho. These early actions included the burning of ballot boxes in Chuschi and incendiary bomb attacks in San Martín de Porres. Despite these events, the government and media largely underestimated the significance of the Shining Path's activities, which were overshadowed by the political transition to civilian rule under President Fernando Belaunde Terry.
El PCP Sendero Luminoso comenzó su guerra popular contra el Estado peruano con una serie de atentados con explosivos contra instalaciones públicas en diversas partes del país, concentrando mayor cantidad de recursos en Ayacucho. Tras el ataque inicial del 17 de mayo de 1980, grupos senderistas realizaron acciones como lanzar bombas incendiarias contra la municipalidad de San Martín de Porres y la tumba del general Velasco, así como robo de explosivos y armas. El gobierno militar no respondió directamente contra Sendero Luminoso hasta después del cambio de gobierno el 28 de julio, cuando asumió Fernando Belaunde Terry.
