Forced Displacement of the Asháninka Community of Cutivireni
In September 1991, a group of 169 Asháninkas from the community of Cutivireni were forcibly displaced due to repeated attacks by the Shining Path (PCP-SL). With the assistance of Father Mariano Gagnon, they were airlifted to the Urubamba Valley, where they found refuge with the Matsiguenga community of Kiriketi. This displacement was part of a broader conflict in the region, where the Asháninka communities faced violence and coercion from PCP-SL.
Desde 1988, PCP-SL realizó incursiones en Cutivireni para adoctrinar a la población y reclutar jóvenes, multiplicando los saqueos, secuestros y asesinatos. Los Asháninka que resistieron huyeron al monte a Tzibokiroato, pero fueron atacados nuevamente por PCP-SL. En septiembre de 1991, con apoyo del padre franciscano Mariano Gagnon, 169 Asháninka fueron trasladados por vía aérea al valle del Urubamba, encontrando refugio en la comunidad Matsiguenga de Kiriketi e creando posteriormente una nueva comunidad autónoma.
