Capture of the last free high-ranking Shining Path leader, Oscar Ramírez Durand.
After a huge and well-publicized military operation to surround him, the dissident Shining Path leader Oscar Ramírez Durand, Feliciano, who had rejected Abimael Guzmán's peace agreement proposal and kept the people's war initiated in 1980, was captured near the city of Huancayo. Ramirez Durand was the last of the top leaders of the PCP SL still at large.
