Alberto Fujimori wins the presidential elections with 62% of the votes. This electoral triumph occurred in a context of serious economic crisis, generalized political violence and the growing presence of subversive groups in Metropolitan Lima. The elections took place when the PCP-SL and the MRTA intensified their actions in the capital, with armed strikes, attacks and selective assassinations. Fujimori's victory marked the beginning of a new political period that would later include radical changes in the counter-subversive strategy.
