Requiem for Peru my Homeland
The book analyzes the myths, prejudices, customs, and institutions of Peru to argue that the loss of values in its corrupt society has led the country to ruin. Although written in 1991 when Fujimori was at the height of his popularity despite terrorism, the economic crisis, and public insecurity, the essay sought to go beyond the looming Fujimori disaster by examining roots so deep that changes of government would not necessarily guarantee improvement. This book is written with the indignation that comes from seeing this country in the terrible situation in which it finds itself. It is a merciless, almost blasphemous analysis of its institutions, myths, and customs, presented — the author says — with the desire that it hurts, and hurts as much as it hurt him to write it. Behind the vehement critique, Morote reveals his profound love for Peru and Peruvians.
