The MRTA justified his assassination by claiming that Lopez Albujar had ordered the 'repassing' of the wounded and the killing of surrendered guerrillas during the Molinos confrontation in April 1989. Lopez Albujar had accompanied President Alan Garcia to the Jauja airport on April 28, 1989, after the confrontation between the Army and the MRTA in the Puyhuan pampa.
