The Displaced People of Ayacucho Remain Trapped in Their Memories
On May 17, 1980, in Chuschi, Ayacucho, terror was born. In this province whose Quechua name means 'corner of the dead,' the number of those killed and disappeared approaches 26,000, according to researchers, over 20 years of violence promoted by Sendero Luminoso (SL). The genocide touched this community of artisans and peasants and altered the population map: the Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación (CVR) reports that 156,575 Ayacuchans migrated to other towns or left the region to save their lives. Many of them took refuge in Lima, and their testimonies should not be forgotten.
