Violence and Drugs in the Alto Huallaga
The largest coca-growing region in the world, in the hands of Senderistas, drug traffickers, soldiers, and police. Sendero Luminoso has entered the Alto Huallaga to provide protection to coca-farming peasants against Colombian drug traffickers and the Peruvian police. At the same time, the Maoist guerrillas have secured financing by collecting quotas from peasants for each arroba of coca leaf sold. In addition, Sendero charges the drug traffickers for each small plane that departs from more than a hundred clandestine airstrips loaded with basic coca paste bound for Colombia.
