The Children of Ayacucho. An Anthropology of Adoption and Family Building in Peru
This valuable ethnographic study analyzes those informal arrangements by which Andean children are sent by their parents to live in new households. At first glance, the "circulation" of children may seem like a form of abandonment and a violation of children's rights. However, when examined more closely, it becomes clear that it is a social practice with meaning for many Andean families; a flexible system that reinforces kinship ties that have been part of the life of Andean communities for decades.
