Violence and Authoritarianism in Peru. Under the Shadow of Shining Path and the Fujimori Dictatorship

This book analyzes the emergence and expansion of political violence in Peru during the 1980s and 1990s. It seeks to understand how political violence shapes and reorders State-society relations, the impact of this violence on civil society, and how these changing dynamics affect democratic governance. In the course of this analysis, two of the most complex and enigmatic phenomena to have emerged in Latin America in recent decades are examined: the extremely violent subversive movement Sendero Luminoso; and the regime of Alberto Fujimori, the political outsider turned dictator, who would remain in power for more than ten years (1990-2000). After describing the context in which these two authoritarian political projects flourished in Peru, the effects on civil society and contemporary Peruvian democracy are analyzed.
