Women from the central highlands participate in the 1992 military parade

Women from the central highlands participate in the military parade of 1992, held for Fiestas Patrias at the Campo de Marte, in Lima. After entering Ayacucho in 1983, the Armed Forces began organizing the population into Civil Defense Committees. By the late 1980s these had become peasant patrols (rondas campesinas) and participated in counter-subversive operations alongside the military forces. In November 1991, under the government of Alberto Fujimori, the Civil Self-Defense Committees Law was enacted, allowing them to arm themselves with shotguns provided by the Armed Forces.
