El 19 de abril de 1980, Abimael Guzmán pronunció el discurso "Somos los iniciadores" al clausurar la I Escuela Militar de Sendero Luminoso, menos de un mes antes del inicio de las acciones armadas. Este discurso fue considerado el más importante de una serie de textos programáticos del PCP-SL que marcaron su transición hacia la lucha armada.
