La captura de Abimael Guzmán Reynoso, conocido como presidente Gonzalo, junto con integrantes de la cúpula dirigencial del PCP-SL, se produce en una urbanización de clase media en el distrito limeño de Surquillo. El GEIN de la Dirección Nacional contra el Terrorismo (DINCOTE) fue el autor de la captura luego de un largo y paciente trabajo de inteligencia y espionaje. Entre los detenidos se encontraban Elena Iparraguirre Revoredo, integrante del Comité Permanente y del Buró Político, así como otros miembros del Comité Central. Su juicio se inicia el 27 de septiembre y dura 18 días.
