Health Crisis in Lurigancho Prison
In 2001, Lurigancho Prison in Lima faced a severe health crisis, with 250 inmates treated for tuberculosis (TB) annually and 150 living with HIV/AIDS. Of the inmates with TBC, 11% were also diagnosed with HIV, and 80% of those with AIDS were near death due to tuberculosis. In less than two years, 22 inmates died from AIDS-related complications.
