Asháninka Counteroffensive Against PCP-SL
In 1991, the Asháninka people, alongside the Peruvian Armed Forces, launched a significant counteroffensive against the Shining Path (PCP-SL) in the region of the Ene River. This effort was marked by the formation of Rondas or Committees of Self-Defense, which played a crucial role in resisting the insurgent group. The Asháninka's organized resistance prevented the Shining Path from advancing further into their territories, establishing Poyeni as a boundary between the areas controlled by the insurgents and those where the Asháninka lived freely.
En 1991 marca el punto de quiebre en la ofensiva senderista en la región Asháninka. Las Fuerzas Armadas, junto con la población Asháninka organizada en Rondas o Comités de Autodefensa, iniciaron una contraofensiva que golpeó duramente a PCP-SL, especialmente en la zona del río Ene. Los Asháninka organizaron rondas de autodefensa de dos tipos: algunas dependían directamente del Ejército como las del valle del Ene, mientras que otras fueron creadas de manera autónoma como las del río Tambo. Esta organización de defensa comunitaria logró contener el avance de PCP-SL, convirtiendo a Poyeni en la frontera entre la zona controlada por el grupo terrorista y el territorio donde los Asháninka vivían con libertad.
