'Mamá Angélica' Dies, the Leading Champion of the Disappeared in Peru
Peruvian social leader Angélica Mendoza viuda de Ascarza passed away on Monday afternoon in a public hospital in Ayacucho, the southern Andean region where she and her children were born and where the most intense violence also erupted in 1980 due to the terrorist group Sendero Luminoso. In September 1983, she co-founded with two other women the first organization in defense of victims of counter-subversive operations, the Asociación Nacional de Familiares de Secuestrados, Desaparecidos y Desaparecidos del Perú (Anfasep).
