Peru Begins Exhumations of the Ethnic Group That Shining Path Decimated

A forensic team has testimony of the existence of up to 160 Asháninka bodies. During two months of fieldwork in the central jungle of the department of Junín, a forensic team from Peru's Instituto de Medicina Legal collected testimonies pointing to the possibility of locating the remains of between 120 and 160 Asháninka people, the Amazonian ethnic group devastated by the terrorist group Sendero Luminoso during the violent years from 1980 to 2000.
