A Path That Is Far From Luminous

Following the capture of the Shining Path's leadership in 1992, there have been several processes of rupture and division within Sendero Luminoso, the main one splitting the organization into two currents: "agreementists" and "continuers." The former are closely tied to its leadership and supported the so-called "Peace Agreement" in which Abimael Guzmán called for laying down arms and ending the "People's War"; the second group rejected this political agreement with Alberto Fujimori's government and called on its members to "continue" armed actions. Both factions continued to experience internal divisions and disputes in the years that followed.
