Vargas Llosa Exploited Our Pain

17 years later, the wounds of Uchuraccay are still open. Widows and mothers of the journalists murdered in Ayacucho are outraged when they recall the injustice that the writer covered up. The writer Mario Vargas Llosa, on his recent and brief visit to Peru, has surprised us with the same tired, worn-out refrain that he was always at the forefront of defending human rights, among other claims. Suddenly, these statements have shaken the dignity and hearts of the relatives of the victims of the journalists murdered in Uchuraccay, Ayacucho, in 1983. With pain and suffering still indelible in their memory, they remember the writer for his inability to reach the truth when he presided over the investigative commission into these tragic events. Gilma de Retto stated that Vargas Llosa "deliberately concealed the truth of the case and that is why he betrayed the tears of the bereaved."
