The Long Agony of Edmundo Camana

The face of pain. Edmundo Camana photographed by Óscar Medrano on April 5, 1983, at the hospital in Huamanga. The man in this photo was one of the survivors of the massacre of 69 peasants in Lucanamarca. His name was Edmundo Camana. And he was 34 years old when his face was captured by a camera in a hospital in Huamanga. A machete split open his skull and left him wounded forever. It happened on April 3, 1983. This week marks thirty years since one of the greatest atrocities perpetrated by Sendero Luminoso. The fate of this man encapsulates that of the thousands of Peruvians who died in a time of barbarism.
