The Trial in the Accomarca Case
The streets around the Castro Castro prison, located in the upper part of the district of San Juan de Lurigancho on the outskirts of Lima, are made of dirt and dust. Neither the remoteness nor the aridity diminishes the determination of the family members involved in the Accomarca case. They are there, throughout every hearing of the trial, in which 29 military personnel are being tried for the massacre of 69 peasants, committed on August 14, 1985. At the entrance of the prison, family members stand holding banners bearing all the names of the victims, as well as their demands for truth and justice, demands that have been deferred for 26 years.
