The Shining Path Members Killed in the Suppression of the Lima Prison Riots Had Refused to Negotiate
The Sendero Luminoso militants killed during the military assault on the El Frontón and Lurigancho prisons, which left 300 dead, refused any type of negotiation, both with the authorities and with members of the peace commission, according to consistent accounts from the Government and independent sources. Peruvian first vice president Luis Alberto Sánchez stated that the Government repeatedly attempted, through the peace commission, lawyers, and judges, to negotiate with the rioters, but never received a response. Sánchez attributed this to "the almost religious obstinacy of a new fanaticism."
