Shining Path Massacres 39 Peasants
39 peasants from a remote jungle village, Canaire in the department of Ayacucho, have been massacred by Sendero Luminoso. The killing was apparently in retaliation for the village's efforts to organize a civil defense patrol. Both the civil defense efforts and SL's response may be related to the growing coca production in the Mantaro river valley.
