The Massacre at "El Frontón"
On June 19, 1986, the most sinister extermination operation took place in the prisons of El Frontón, Lurigancho, and Santa Bárbara. 254 inmates were extrajudicially executed. The rioters denounced an attempted genocide under the pretext of transfer to a high-security prison with a strict regime in Canto Grande. At El Frontón, the Navy, under the command of Admiral (ret.) Luis Giampietri Rojas, was in charge of suppressing the riot. The prisoners had taken three members of the Guardia Republicana hostage. The Minister of the Interior, Agustín Mantilla, arrived at the island by order of President Alan García.
