Shining Path Back in Action
Dissidents from the Peruvian armed Maoist party Sendero Luminoso — an organization declared ''virtually destroyed'' in 1996 by the government of Alberto Fujimori — opened two insurgent fronts in the jungle in recent weeks. The guerrilla groups that went into operation belong to Sendero Rojo, which does not accept the surrender communicated in 1993 from prison by the party's founder Abimael Guzmán, and which has since remained sheltered in hard-to-reach jungle areas carrying out sporadic incursions.
