Belaúnde Terry Calls Elections in Peru for 1985 and Gives the Army a Greater Role in the Fight Against Guerrillas
Peruvian President Fernando Belaúnde Terry called general elections for April 14, 1985, and turned to the armed forces in response to the bloody offensive by the Maoist terrorist organization Sendero Luminoso, which in the last two weeks had claimed more than 180 lives in the Andean country.
