President Alberto Fujimori obtained on Saturday night (Peruvian time) the success he most coveted: the capture of Abimael Guzmán, the leader of Sendero Luminoso, a terrorist group of Maoist ideology that has drenched Peru in blood over the course of a revolutionary war campaign that began 12 years ago. "It was my turn to lose," the police reported were the words spoken by President Gonzalo at the moment of his capture in a Lima neighborhood, where he was presiding over a meeting of the Central Committee of Sendero Luminoso. The extraordinary police operation aims to decapitate Sendero in one blow, but Lima residents now fear a wave of kamikaze attacks.
