Peru: Investigating Twenty Years of Recent Violence
The cataclysm that befell Peru during the last two decades of the 20th century — perhaps the most severe in its history — is the subject of all the works presented in this section. For fifteen years, the violence unleashed by the most brutal terrorist movements in Latin America, which also implicated the Army, caused a total of seventy thousand victims; in addition, democratic freedoms were increasingly curtailed over ten years by an authoritarian government that summarily imprisoned another twenty thousand Peruvians on the pretext of complicity with terrorism.
