Barrios Altos Case vs. Peru
Judgment of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, issued on March 14, 2001, on the violations of human rights by the State of PERU in the case of the Barrios Altos crimes. Specifically, the IACHR ruled that the Peruvian state violated the right to life, the right to personal integrity, and the right to judicial guarantees and judicial protection. It also declares that amnesty laws No. 26479 and No. 26492 are incompatible with the American Convention on Human Rights and, consequently, have no legal effect, and that the State of Peru must investigate the facts to determine those responsible for the human rights violations referred to in this Judgment, as well as publicly disclose the results of that investigation and punish those responsible.
