Former president Alberto Fujimori is sentenced (07-04-09)

In a landmark ruling, former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori was sentenced on April 7, 2009 to 25 years in prison by the Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, which had previously found him guilty of human rights abuses for being responsible for the crimes of aggravated homicide, grievous bodily harm, and kidnapping. As explained by the chamber's president, magistrate César San Martín, the sentence is the most severe that could be imposed on the former head of state, who would not be released from prison until February 10, 2032.
