Shining Path Gets Rattled
The resonance achieved by the MRTA with the takeover of the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima has not pleased Sendero at all. In a lengthy article recently sent to the editorial offices of various local media outlets, the spokesman for that terrorist organization in Brussels, Luis Arce Borja, contends, with barely concealed irritation, that the publicity surrounding that action "could not conceal its theatrical and even ridiculous aspects" and that it "does not pursue any revolutionary objective." "On the contrary," he states, "it serves fundamentally the political-military plans of the Peruvian government and the Americans." Published March 20, 1997.
