As the first month of the takeover of the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima approaches, the question of how the government will extricate itself from this serious situation is becoming pressing. There has been a promising but predictable first phase consisting of "goodwill" gestures on the part of the MRTA (basically releasing the majority of hostages in batches) and from the government, which did not prevent the terrorist movement's "justificatory" messages from being publicized.
