The Creed of Shining Path
Peru is mired in a general crisis whose only way out is revolution, and a military coup would only "aggravate the contradictions within the camp of reaction," declared members of the Maoist guerrilla Sendero Luminoso, imprisoned at the Cantogrande jail, located in a suburb to the north of Lima, to this newspaper. Over the course of some five hours of conversation [see EL PAÍS of Sunday, October 29], including a lunch of rice with tomato and some scraps of meat, plus a watery pineapple juice, two representatives of the Senderista prisoners laid out their views to this newspaper and answered questions with cordiality and conviction.
