Heirs of the Inca and Followers of Mao

An old Quechua legend tells that somewhere remote in the Andes, the mutilated body of the Inca will grow and develop in the womb of the Pacha Mama (Mother Earth), who will one day give birth to the new Savior, who will be none other than the resurrected Inca. He will be the one to liberate his people from the eternal yoke. This story, born in the wake of the Spanish conquest, remains alive among the Quechua peoples of the Andes and is passed from mouth to mouth in the finest indigenous tradition. In some places it is embellished by saying that those who mutilated the Inca are the Awichis (ancestors) of the landowner. Published in 1986.
